Question
What action is the Welsh Government taking to improve outcomes for women with ovarian cancer, including earlier diagnosis, improved awareness of symptoms and GP support, and equitable access to specialist treatment and clinical trials?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Care, Mental Health and Women’s Health (Delyth Jewell)
The Welsh Government has committed to the development of a 10-year National Cancer Strategy for Wales. It will set out an ambitious vision for cancer services and provide the NHS with the clarity it needs to achieve better outcomes and experiences for people affected by cancers such as ovarian.
The Strategy will have a particular focus on what more the NHS can do to detect cancer earlier, including support to GPs referring people for suspected cancer. The Strategy will also outline the requirements for delivering timely pathways of specialist care and improving access to clinical trials.
In advance of the publication of the Strategy on World Cancer Day 2027, NHS Performance and Improvement is working with health boards to improve gynaecological cancer performance. This includes participation in the National Ovarian Cancer Audit and actions taken in response to the Health and Social Care Committee’s follow up Inquiry into Gynaecological Cancer.
