Question
What steps is the Welsh Government taking to ensure that all pupils receive effective CPR training before leaving school, and how is the delivery of lifesaving skills currently monitored across schools?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language (Anna Brychan)
The Health and well-being Area within the Curriculum for Wales includes learning and experience around critical-thinking skills necessary to consider decision-making, including risks, for learners and others. Schools should therefore consider how learners can safely intervene to support others who may be at risk, including through the development of lifesaving and first aid skills.
The Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust works directly with schools to develop CPR skills among teachers and learners through its Save a Life Cymru programme. Further information can be found at: Shoctober - Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust
Local authorities support schools to meet the expectations of the Curriculum for Wales through advice, professional learning, collaborative networks and access to relevant resources and partner support. The Welsh Government does not collect data on CPR training.
