Question
Will the Cabinet Minister provide the average number of scheduled operating sessions undertaken per week by a full-time equivalent consultant surgeon, broken down by health board and surgical specialty?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Health and Care (Mabon ap Gwynfor)
The Welsh Government does not hold this information centrally.
Information on scheduled operating sessions undertaken by consultant surgeons is held locally by individual health boards as part of their workforce, job planning and operational management arrangements. The availability and configuration of operating sessions can vary between specialties, organisations and individual job plans.
The productivity and utilisation of theatre capacity are monitored routinely through NHS Wales performance and improvement arrangements. NHS Performance and Improvement works with health boards to review theatre productivity, efficiency and performance metrics to support service improvement and recovery of planned care services.
Members seeking detailed information on the average number of scheduled operating sessions undertaken by full-time equivalent consultant surgeons, broken down by health board and surgical specialty, may wish to approach health boards directly, as they are responsible for holding and managing this operational information.
