Some parents may find themselves in desperate circumstances and feel unable to care for their newborn. Wales should have a safe, confidential option where a baby can be handed over safely to trained professionals and receive immediate care.
More details
Safe-haven boxes and services already exist in parts of the United States and other countries. Wales should urgently investigate these models and consider whether a similar system could be introduced here.
Parents in crisis should have a safe place to take their newborn, 24 hours a day, with immediate medical care for the baby and appropriate support for the parent.
Where legally possible, access should be anonymous or confidential, with strong safeguarding procedures.
I am calling on the Welsh Government to properly investigate, consult experts and take action towards establishing a safe-haven service in Wales. If these services can operate elsewhere, Wales should seriously consider whether they can save lives here too.
The aim is to provide another safe option in an emergency and help prevent newborn babies from being left in unsafe circumstances.
