For many women, the first routine NHS scan is around 12 weeks, leaving almost the entire first trimester without routine reassurance. Those who can afford it can access earlier private scans; those who cannot may have to wait unless problems develop. A 6–8 week scan could provide reassurance, identify pregnancies needing further assessment earlier and reduce this inequality. Early pregnancy care should be proactive, not something women access only when something goes wrong.
More details
The first weeks of pregnancy can involve enormous emotional uncertainty, despite there being little routine NHS contact during this period. Earlier scanning could help confirm that a pregnancy is developing in the uterus, provide reassurance where appropriate and allow pregnancies requiring further assessment to enter the correct pathway sooner. Private early scans are readily available to those who can pay, creating an inequality in access to reassurance. This proposal is not about guaranteeing viability at six weeks, but offering equitable, compassionate early pregnancy care.
