We call on the Welsh Government to develop a workforce plan that provides sufficient Band 5 opportunities for newly qualified nurses graduating in Wales, so that students trained in Wales have a fair opportunity to begin their careers within NHS Wales.
More details
Student nurses in Wales complete over 2,300 hours of clinical placement and dedicate years to training. Many balance unpaid placements with paid work and family commitments because they want to serve NHS Wales.
Despite this, many newly qualified nurses are struggling to secure Band 5 posts after graduation. This risks losing skilled professionals to other parts of the UK or other careers, despite Wales investing in their education.
We ask the Welsh Government to work with NHS Wales, HEIW and health boards to improve workforce planning and create sufficient opportunities for newly qualified nurses to begin their careers in Wales.
As a final-year student nurse, I am deeply concerned that after years of training and sacrifice, many graduates may be unable to begin their careers in the NHS in Wales.
