Children in Wales do not receive the same protected funding for PE and physical activity as children in England. English primary schools benefit from ring-fenced PE and Sport Premium funding, supporting training, equipment, and quality provision. In Wales, PE is often squeezed by time pressures and limited resources. This funding gap affects children’s physical development, confidence, wellbeing, and lifelong health.
More details
Wales does not provide ring-fenced funding for PE and physical activity in primary schools. In England, protected funding supports training, equipment, and consistent delivery. In Wales, PE must compete with other school pressures, creating uneven experiences for children. Many primary teachers receive limited specialist training in PE, dance, and fundamental movement skills. Without dedicated funding, schools struggle to invest in professional development or specialist support, affecting lesson quality and progression. Schools also report limited or outdated equipment and restricted access to suitable indoor space. Expecting schools to self-fund PE resources from already stretched budgets is unsustainable. High-quality physical education builds physical literacy, confidence, wellbeing, behaviour, and readiness to learn. Early investment in movement supports lifelong health and participation. Ring-fenced funding would create fairer opportunities for children across Wales.
