What steps is the Cabinet Minister taking to increase the number of neonatal units in Wales?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Deputy Minister for Social Care, Mental Health and Women’s Health (Delyth Jewell)
Our priority is to ensure babies receive the right care, in the right place and at the right time through safe, sustainable and high-quality neonatal services. Currently the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (JCC) commission nine units in Wales, 3 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and 5 special care baby units (SCBUs), to provide specialist care for premature and sick babies.
The NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (JCC) is currently undertaking a review of neonatal services, focused on future requirements for neonatal cot configuration across Wales.
We continue to work with NHS Wales, the Wales Maternity and Neonatal Network and health boards to strengthen provision to babies and families. This includes the current improvements through the national Bliss Baby Charter programme, with funding secured for 2026-27 to improve care and the experiences of babies and their families.
