What is the Welsh Government doing to protect and support libraries across Wales?

Atebwyd gan Trefnydd, Chief Whip and Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport (Heledd Fychan)
The Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964 places a statutory duty on all local authorities to provide a library service that is both comprehensive and efficient. While the legislation sets out this requirement, it is for each local authority to determine how best to meet the needs of its communities.
Alongside core funding through the local government settlement, the Welsh Government supports the development of library services through targeted investment programmes that help libraries modernise, promote digital inclusion, improve literacy, and strengthen community wellbeing.
The new Culture and Sport Strategy will include sector specific plans, including one for libraries. We recognise the impact cuts have had on services across Wales and are committed to working with local authorities to better understand what support is needed from government to help them fulfil their statutory duties.
